Shooting – An Introduction
Shooting is a traditional Sport being played worldwide since 15th century. Rifle shooting and pistol shooting as a sport has come a long way in India, although traces are available that outdoor shooting was being practiced in form of Archery since 11th Century.
From just being confined to the maharajas of the princely states of the country, to a Sport that has gained huge popularity amongst the young Sports enthusiasts. Veteran shooters for India including Abhinav Bindra, Major Rajya Vardhan Singh Rathore, Anjali Bhagwat and many other prominent shooters have brought laurels to the country, thus contributing to the upliftment of the game.
Although the game was considered royal, confined to the Maharajas of the princely states of India. Rajas, princes and many princesses were fond of Shooting and frequently visited the woods, to hunt prey, using their rifles. Over the passing years, the game secured its place in the military training as well. These days there are numerous indoor shooting ranges and shooting clubs that offer rifle shooting and pistol shooting courses.
Primarily Shooting was used for police and military training, but later it was introduced as Shooting Sport since Shooting requires great concentration skills, to acquire precision while Shooting the target. Shooting doesn’t involve as much physical strength but Shooting uses the best coordination of mind-function with hand-eye and a little bit of physical strength.
Shooting is a Sport that requires immense skill, inspiration and intense testing of shooter’s nerves. Shooting tests mental strength and effective fine motor skills as well. That’s the reason why people of all ages can compete in this game at a global level. In fact, the oldest gold medallist in Olympic history comes from Shooting.
Before the arrival of firearms in the 13th century, Archery was the finest Shooting skills testing Sport. The idea was to shoot targets for accuracy from a distance or set of distances. This practice was quite common during the medieval years, especially in India. The origin of Shooting in India can be traced back to the medieval period, when Indians used to practice the game in the form of Archery. We have witnessed many “Swayamvars” happening based upon Shooting skills of the princes.
The Shooting Sport in India has gained worldwide recognition, after Major Rajya Vardhan Rathore won the first individual silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. India touched another milestone in 2008, when Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra won the country’s first Olympic individual gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. Some of the legendary Indian shooters, who have excelled in the Sports and have brought a lot of glory to the country, include Gagan Narang, Rajya Vardhan Rathore, Anjali Bhagwat, Samresh Jung, Jaspal Rana.
Now-a-days in India, children from 8-9 years of age are joining Shooting training programmes that will definitely develop more precise shooters for India.
